While I appreciate its completely uncompromising nature, I’ve never been able to fully embrace death metal. Imagine my surprise then at how much I’ve been enjoying “Corpsegrinder,” the debut solo LP by George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher, the voice of Cannibal Corpse, one of the most revered bands in the subgenre’s history.
Perhaps that’s because the record, co-produced by Nick Bellmore (Dee Snider/Kingdom of Sorrow) and Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed), veers away from the death metal sound into more of a thrash-leaning attack on top of rhythms bordering on hardcore. (Or maybe I’ve warmed up to Fisher after his outstanding features last year on songs by Ice Nine Kills and Dee Snider.) While still a pulverizing onslaught from beginning to end, a little bit of extra space in the production gives the riffs room to breathe, even groove, as Fisher, in his indelible growl, delivers his vocals in more distinguishable patterns than we’re accustomed to hearing from him.
With Nick Bellmore on drums and Charlie Bellmore on guitar and bass, “Corpsegrinder” has a vastly different feel from Cannibal Corpse, or any other death metal band, yet is still very much worthy of bearing the name of a death metal legend. Cannibal Corpse is still going strong—its 2021 album “Violence Unimagined” garnered some of the best reviews of its long career—but here’s hoping that “Corpsegrinder” isn’t merely a one-off and that Fisher finds time to carve out a niche as a solo artist.
