SiriusXM curator/host and founder of Headbang for Science, Jose “Metal Ambassador” Mangin has launched the annual $33,000 Headbang for Science Scholarship to support the next generation of heavy metal lovers pursuing an education in health care or the physical sciences. Three winners chosen annually each will receive an $11,000 award.
“Finally diehard headbangers can achieve national recognition and monetary rewards for their educational achievements,” Mangin said. “I want to encourage students to excel in school, love their metal, and give them financial and motivational support towards a successful future in healthcare/science.”
Mangin is a dedicated advocate for education in the sciences for the heavy metal community. Studying chemistry at the University of Arizona before going to graduate school for pharmacy at the University of Tennessee, Mangin knows the value of an education in the sciences first-hand.
“I wouldn’t have this blessed career and life if it weren’t for my pursuit of a pharmacy degree,” he said. “I owe everything to my education.”
To give back, Mangin founded Headbang for Science Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (Federal Tax ID# 47-1927892) dedicated to funding the education of metalheads studying the sciences.
The $33,000 Headbang for Science scholarship will go to three “far beyond driven” students who have excellent grades, financial need and a deep passion for heavy metal music. All high school seniors, four-year undergraduate students or graduate students who are pursuing degrees in healthcare or physical sciences, possess a passion for heavy metal and have a 3.0 GPA or higher may apply.
Mangin joins a long list of public figures who support education on Bold.org. Other Bold.org scholarship donors include Terry Crews, Jameela Jamil, Dwyane Wade, Sloane Stephens, Imagine Dragons and many more.
Applications must be submitted by June 15, 2023.
